Teach Your Dog To Sit
Author: Jason Stepp
Teaching your dog to sit is one of the first steps of dog
behavior training. To some people, teaching your dog to sit
can be a very stressful task! Let's face it, some dogs are just
very stubborn by nature! Don't worry though, you will have the
ability to teach your dog to sit by the end of this
article!
Since most dogs are stubborn by nature, there is something
that you have to do before you can even attempt to teach your
dog how to sit. Before you go any further, if your dog is not
already responding to your voice, you can go to my dog
behavior training blog to learn how you can teach
your dog to respond to your voice.
Once you are sure that your dog will respond to your voice,
you can attempt to teach him/her to sit. Just like most dog
behavior training methods, when teaching your dog how
to sit, you should have some treats readily available.
Remember... treats are for rewards, so only give your dog a
treat when he/she does something good. Some people give their
dogs treats throughout the day, which will cause them to think
that they don't have to do anything to get that treat!
Now, take your dog into a quiet room. It is important to
take your dog into a room with just the two of you. Dogs
(especially puppies) have very small attention spans, and the
slightest distraction will cause them to lose focus on the
ultimate goal- learning how to sit.
Now that both you and your dog are in a quiet room, stand in
front of your dog. In a calm voice, say "sit". After you say
sit, gently push your dogs rear end to the ground. When its
rear end is touching the ground (even if you have put it there)
give it a treat! Remember, dog obedience
training really relies on rewarding your dog for doing
the right thing.
After a couple times of saying "sit" and pushing its rear
end to the ground and rewarding it, your dog will catch on! It
will realize that when its rear end touches, it will get a
treat! It will start to associate putting its rear on the
ground with getting a treat, and complete the task without
being assisted!
Congratulations! You have just taken the first step in
dog obedience training. If you can teach your dog to
sit, you can basically teach it anything that you wish! Dogs
are much smarter than most people think, so dont just stop at
sitting! Move on to some more tricks, and soon, your dog will
be one of the most well behaved dogs in your neighborhood!
