Pet Owners Guide to
Selling a Home
Author: Art Gib If you're a dog or cat
lover, that doesn't mean that everyone else is. And, while you
couldn't imagine your life without little Fido or Spot, some
homebuyers abhor the thought of pets in the home they could
potentially buy. This is why owning a pet can make it hard for
you to sell your home. Even if your home is impeccably clean,
it still may sway a homebuyer to look elsewhere on the block.
So, here are some things that you can do to make sure that
owning your pet doesn't disrupt the sale of your home.
Have your carpets professionally steam cleaned. No one likes to
think that their house might need to be steam cleaned, but you
may have become accustomed to having your pets around, so you
may not notice what needs to be cleaned. Having your carpets
steamed ensures that any lingering odors or shedding hair is
out of the picture. You can be sure that your Oklahoma real
estate is fresh and clean, no matter who comes to see the home.
If you know you have a home showing, arrange your day so that
your pet isn't home in the meantime. Take your dog for a walk
and get him out of the house. After all, potential buyers don't
need to be acquainted with your pet and getting them out of the
way may increase your chances of selling your home. In fact, if
your dog is especially noisy or overly friendly, it may put a
buyer off to the point that they take your home of their list
of properties that they liked.
Clean up any evidence of your pet, especially in main living
areas like the living room and kitchen. If your dog eats in the
kitchen, remove his bowl and food to a better suited area such
as the backyard or the garage while showing the home. You don't
want potential buyers to be distracted while looking through
the home. They should be focused on what your Oklahoma real
estate has to offer, and not be concerned about there being a
pet in the kitchen.
Remember that not every homeowner likes to have pets in their
house, so be sensitive to the fact that some homebuyers will be
uncomfortable with the thought. If you can keep your pet out of
sight and out of mind until you have found a buyer, then you
won't have to deal with as much opposition while you try to
sell your home.
