Fish Infection Fact Sheet

Author: Cheryl Lewis

Keep in mind that your fish are not going to get every single type of infection that may be out there. You may never have to deal with a sick fish. You will need to keep in mind that once your fish has contracted something it could die fro the illness or infection. When it comes to infections they can be very serious. They will begin to affect the way that your fish eat, swim, and even breed. You will want to keep in mind that it may affect the fish in many other ways as well.

As for how you can treat these infections, you will find that the way you approach treatment is very different for each infection. You will need to take a picture of your fish while trying to spot some clear cut signs. For instance, if your fish is losing its scales you’ll want to take note. You will also want to look for any black spots or warning signs that it could be a disease or parasite as well. You will want to note somehow the affects that the infection is having on your fish and take it someone. You will want to take the proof and facts to people who are vets, pet store owners, fish breeders, as well as other professionals.

The following are some common diseases.

The first common disease is known as cottonwood. This disease is something that strikes many different types of fish, but it will make them appear to have creamy or fluffy mucus all over their body and finds. They call it cottonwood, basically because it looks like cotton. There are many ways that you will be able to treat cottonwood. You will just need to give them a salt bath and you may have to treat the entire pond. You will also want to check the other fish for signs of cottonwood disease.

Keep in mind that fish can also get TB. This happens to be a very noticeable disease. You will need to watch how little the fish is eating and their fins will look like they are fraying. You will also notice that the fish will have raised scales on the body. Keep in mind that TB is hard to cure. There really is nothing that you can do other then give your fish some antibiotics that you will be able to get from your local vet or breeder. You will want to make sure that you ear gloves when dealing with a fish that has TB. It’s not something that you really can cure if you haven’t, caught it early on.

To know the difference between a healthy fish and a sick fish, you will want to keep in mind that the healthy fish will look healthy and will act like they are full of life, while a sick fish will barely move.
